BACK TO SKIN SCHOOL

THERE IS NO BETTER TIME TO GET BACK IN TO A GREAT ROUTINE AND HERE ARE OUR TOP TIPS FOR STARTING THE NEW SEASON RIGHT (NONE OF WHICH REQUIRES A SINGLE BEAUTY PRODUCT). 

Autumn is a great time for skin. No more humidity (here's hoping anyway), less time spent in and out of dehydrating air-con, less sun exposure and of course less time over indulging. 

Here is a round up of the best tips we've picked up along the way that help kick start a new season of glowing healthy skin.  

CUT THE SUGAR:

The Facts: Excess sugar consumption leads to the breakdown of collagen. 

Homework: Reduce what you can and substitute where possible. I tried this for a week and the main thing I noticed was a reduction in dark circles under my eyes in the morning. This autumn make a conscious decision to add more Omega's and antioxidants in to your diet regularly. Having a healthy diet is important to providing all of the nutrients that protect  your skin.

DIGITAL DETOX:

The Facts: Our mobile phones are an essential part of life these days. Studies have shown that not only can the high energy visible light emissions from our phones and computer screens penetrate deeply in to our skin and cause free radical damage- it also affects our sleep and anxiety levels. All of these things have a detrimental affect on how our skin looks.  

Homework: Keep your mobile phone clean (same with other things like sunglasses) as they can attract bacteria. Leave your phone in another room when you go to bed (before you say it- just buy an alarm clock). Ensure you use a broad spectrum sunscreen and antioxidants in your skincare routine to protect from HEV light omissions. 

TAKE TIME TO CHILL:

The Facts: Studies have shown that high levels of cortisol are linked to our faces looking older because it can have a negative effect on the collagen and elastin fibres which make our skin plump and smooth.

Homework: Prioritise finding a way to relax and unwind. If you don't have the time then schedule it in like any other beauty appointment. There is no face cream to combat the signs of anxiety and stress on your face. 

SLEEP MORE:

The Facts: A poor nights sleep shows all over our face with a dull grey complexion and also around our eyes. Sleep is the time when our cells are most active, self healing and repairing damage. 

Homework: If you follow a digital detox then it should be easier to switch off and go to bed earlier. If you struggle to get to sleep earlier try a bath in the evening and invest in a lavender pillow spray. A silk pillowcase (which admittedly sounds so self- indulgent but stay with me) lab tests have shown that sleeping on a silk pillow absorbs significantly less face cream and creates 43% less friction or 'drag' on the face versus a cotton pillowcase.
