Suffering with teenage skin as an adult?

One of our most popular skin goals on Fetch Beauty is Tackling Breakouts. We're learning that a lot of our readers are looking for skincare that is both anti-blemish and anti-ageing. So its our job to get out there and find solutions that work.

We chatted to Harley Street Surgeon and creator of 111Skin Dr. Yannis Alexandrides about possible causes and solutions to blemish prone skin as an adult. "Our new Clarity Collection offers a comprehensive range of targeted skincare that works to clear the complexion. The entire regime provides skin the best chance to relieve imperfections through clinically inspired ingredients and delivery methods."

LETS START WITH BLACKHEADS:

Cleansing and exfoliating are key to preventing blackheads, according to Dr. Yannis. "I would recommend using a warm cleansing cloth to open pores and then use a suitable formula that targets blackheads. I would also suggest using an acid-based exfoliator to gently remove dead skin cells helping to clear congested pores while also purifying." The doctor recommends following the 111Skin Exfolactic Cleanser with the Clinical Exfoliator. Ok thanks Doc- done & done.

TREATMENT & PREVENTION:

For healthy blemish free skin our diet, hormones, stress and environment play a huge part. Some things are preventable by increasing the antioxidants in our diet. In fact one of our favourite supplements Super Greens from Dr. Perricone is great for preventing breakouts long term. Another maintenance treatment that you should be working in to your routine is masks that purify and calm inflammation. "Treating acne requires formulas which clear pores, calm inflammation and reduce sebum production, all while maintaining the skin's microbiome, PH levels, and balance hydration."

Its clear that controlling inflammation is key when tackling breakouts and one of our all time favourites Kypris has a serum specifically blended to promote a calmer balanced complexion. Clearing Serum enlists help from mineral friend, zinc, fruit derived AHAs, supportive Centella asiatica, soothing lilac leaf stem cells, inflammation tamers: green tea, lavender, and chaparral, and an array of sustainably procured, nutrient-rich botanicals, like quinoa & sunflower, for a calm, balanced complexion.

DR. YANNIS RECOMMENDS:

There are some products which are worth investing in if you suffer with regular breakouts and inflammation. 'I would recommend the 111Skin Anti-Blemish Bio Cellulose Facial Mask which is a dual-compartment mask that recognises zone specific acne triggers.' Dr. Yannis created this clever mask to target the causes of blemishes on the different parts of the face.

From the nose upwards sweat, hairstyling products and diet cause breakouts. From the nose down its more likely to be hormonal fluctuations and (enter shocked face) mobile phone use and bacteria.

TEENAGE VERSUS ADULT ACNE:

According to Allies of Skin founder Nicholas Travis, stress and environment are a key factor in adult acne versus teenage acne. "The difference is that adult acne is mainly due to underlying issues triggering hormonal activity and is more likely to be linked to taking certain types of medication, going on or off birth control, and stress, or lack of sleep." For a one size fits all product Allies of Skin have introduced the Promise Keeper Overnight Blemish Facial. Specifically created for hormonal and stress-related breakouts that may not have responded well to traditional acne products. It not only treats existing breakouts, but also helps prevent future ones. Lixirskin's Night Switch BHA/AHA created by Dr. Colette Haydon is another night time solution to preventing ongoing breakouts which should be mixed with Universal Emulsion Serum base. Its a blend of three acids specially designed to clarify problem-skin, exfoliate to dislodge dead and strongly pigmented cells and encourage cell turn around to renew the skin.

HOW TO DEAL WITH SCARRING:

Its hard to say don't pop, squeeze or cover up a breakout and so scarring is sadly inevitable. With the right exfoliation and soothing products scarring can be managed with cellular regeneration products like retinol and strong antioxidants. According to Dr. Yannis "In order to relieve scarring, skin needs to be fortified with antioxidants which help to repair and restore." In fact the doctors hero serum contains a master antioxidant that is key to cellular regeneration. "My unique NAC Y2 formula contains N-acetylcysteine which is a precursor to glutathione- a master antioxidant. This serum will improve skin resilience and work to alleviate scarring.' For those of you with more sensitive skin the Kypris Moonlight Catalyst offers a natural alternative to retinoids, increasing cellular renewal to help with scarring but also signs of ageing.
